Collision Results in Point Wells Grounding

Summary Information 

Date of Incident:  
June 10, 2000,  about 12:00am

Location:  
Collision - Admiralty Inlet near Double Bluff , near the south end of Whidbey Island
Grounding - Point Wells, near Edmonds

Product/Quantity:  
The Lucky Buck had the following on board: 125,000 gallons of diesel, 700 gallons of hydraulic oil and 700 gallons of lube oil.  To date there has been a leak of an unknown quantity of diesel.

Cause:  
The Bowfin collided with the barge Lucky Buck, tearing a 6 by 15 foot hole in the Lucky Buck. The cause of the collision is still under investigation.

June 13, 8:30 a.m. - 

The Lucky Buck has been de-watered and moved to the Chevron Pier for off-loading.  The Lucky Buck has been stabilized and doubled boomed. Foss is on stand-bye as an additional precaution.

The State of Washington, Department of Ecology is investigating the incident.

June 12, 10:00 a.m. -  

The Lucky Buck was being towed when it collided with the Bowfin, in Admiralty inlet near Double Bluff, about 12:00 a.m. Saturday, June 10th. 

The Lucky Buck was then towed from the scene of the collision, but couldn't be brought to a pier because it was taking in water from damage caused by the collision. 

To prevent the barge from sinking it was intentionally grounded near Point Wells, south of downtown Edmonds.

The Lucky Buck had the following on board: 125,000 gallons of diesel, 700 gallons of hydraulic oil and 700 gallons of lube oil.  To date there has been a leak of unknown quantity of diesel.

Once the damage to the barge has been temporarily repaired, it will be re-floated and towed to a pier for offloading and follow-up repairs.
